The lively and dynamic US wine market has not suffered the adverse effects of the present economic crisis. On the contrary, the US is one of the world’s biggest wine consumers and has the highest growth trend. In 2011, US consumers uncorked around 3.7 billion bottles of wine, and the country overtook France and Italy as the world’s leading wine consumer (International Wine and Spirit Record data).
Regular wine drinkers in the US now account for 55% of the population. Although wine is still a luxury for most consumers, and is more expensive than other drinks, factors like the consumption of better quality wines, “in” social habits and the known health benefits of wine consumption are all contributing to the expansion of the market, so that wine consumption is becoming an integral part of American culture. In addition, increasing numbers of young people and women are drinking wine. They account for 65% of the market, and have a particular preference for red wines, including both US (mostly from California) and foreign labels. The traditional US familiarity with Italy makes it the leading exporter both in terms of volume and in terms of turnover, amounting to a total of around 1.26 billion dollars. Italy’s leading market position also corresponds with a magical moment for Puglia.
The increasing maturity of US wine consumers means that they tend to move away from the classical wines (Pinot Nero, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Cabernet) in order to explore new varieties and labels. The present tendencies of American consumers have allowed Puglia’s wines to acquire a great deal of visibility, and they are now on their way to conquering the world’s biggest market.
